Age verification for sites and apps in Israel, without storing the date of birth

A checkbox does not stop a minor, and a stored date of birth is one more thing to protect. JERIX reads the age from a passport or an Israeli ID card and gives your platform a yes or no against the age you set. The images and biometrics are deleted right after the check.

Where an age check has to hold.

Four places Israeli platforms are asked who is really behind the account.

Social networks and community apps

A bill tabled in the Knesset would require social networks to verify a user's age before an account is opened, and would bar keeping the age information after the check. It is a bill, not a law, and its wording may change.

With JERIX. JERIX answers the one question the bill asks: is this person over the age you set. The answer is yes or no, and the date of birth never reaches your platform.

Gaming and in-game purchases

A checkbox age gate is passed by any twelve-year-old. Platforms with paid loot boxes and real-money features are asked who is actually behind the account.

With JERIX. Age is read from a government document, not guessed from a face, and the same verified player cannot come back with a second account.

Age-restricted products and services

An online shop or service that sells only to adults needs a check that holds up, without becoming the keeper of every customer's identity documents.

With JERIX. Run the check at sign-up or checkout. You keep a yes or no against your minimum age, not a scan of the customer's ID.

Accounts opened for someone else

A minor borrows a parent's details, or an adult opens an account and hands it over. A form that asks for a birth year cannot tell.

With JERIX. The live selfie is matched to the face on the document, so the person holding the phone is the person whose age was read.

Two Israeli documents, one yes or no.

Both paths answer the age question. The passport path also proves the document is genuine.

DocumentHow it is checkedWhat you receive
Biometric passportThe chip is read in the app and its signature is verified to the issuing state's root, offline. The date of birth comes from data the state signed, and the selfie is matched to the face stored on the chip.Verified, yes or no. Old enough, yes or no.
Israeli ID cardPhoto-based: the card is photographed, the date of birth is read from it, and the selfie is matched to the card's photo. The card's chip is never read.Verified, yes or no. Old enough, yes or no.

A forged or altered passport fails its chip signature. How passport chip verification works.

How it works, in three steps.

1. You open the check

Your server asks JERIX for a verification with your minimum age, and your site or app opens one URL.

2. Document and selfie

The person scans a passport chip in the app, or photographs an Israeli ID card, and takes a selfie that is matched to the document's face.

3. Yes or no comes back

Your server receives verified, yes or no, and old enough, yes or no. The images and biometrics are deleted right after. A check takes under ten seconds.

The age is checked. The birth date stays out of your database.

You cannot leak a date of birth you never received.

Your platform receives no name, no ID number, no date of birth and no image. JERIX retains no images or biometrics, so there is no archive of faces or ID scans to breach. Two platforms receive different references for the same person and cannot match their users against each other.

Inside the sign-up you already have.

One URL opened inside your existing sign-up, and two server-to-server calls. No SDK is required, so your stack is not a gating question. When the check should run inside your own app, use the React Native or Flutter SDK. You set the minimum age per flow.

Questions about age verification in Israel.

Is age verification required by law in Israel?

Not as a general duty for online platforms today. A bill in the Knesset proposes age verification for social networks before an account is opened. It is a bill, not a law, and this page is not legal advice. Platforms that check age now do it to protect minors and to be ready if the bill advances.

Can I verify age without storing the date of birth?

Yes. JERIX reads the date of birth from the document and compares it to the minimum age you set. Your platform receives only a yes or no, so there is no date of birth in your database to protect.

Does age verification work with an Israeli ID card?

Yes. An Israeli ID card is verified from photographs of the card, and its chip is never read. It returns the same yes or no answer. A biometric passport is the stronger path, because its chip carries data the issuing state signed.

How long does an age check take for the user?

Under ten seconds for the verification itself. The person scans or photographs one document and takes one selfie. There is no form to fill and no account to create with JERIX.
